Dear Friend, Subscriber, and Category Pirate,

The happiest, most fulfilled people we know don’t want to retire.

No one wants to sit around watching TV all day — what you’re really after is agency.

You want to wake up every day with purpose, impact, and control over your time. You want your work to match your curiosity, creativity, and impact. You want work to bring purpose to your life, instead of being a burden.

In this Pirate Jam Session, you’ll question everything you’ve been taught about retirement.

You’ll hear why the financial system benefits from keeping you trapped in the wrong mindset, optimizing for escape instead of agency. You’ll understand why don’t need to retire — you just need to reframe your work. And you’ll discover why the happiest, most fulfilled people don’t retire. They just design work that works for them.

We break down all of this and explain why:

Retirement is not the goal—doing work you love for life is. Mick Jagger is 81 and still rocking stadiums. Dolly Parton refuses to quit. NBA legend Bill Walton told Christopher to stop calling himself retired and start calling himself a teacher.
Work is not the enemy—bad work is the enemy. If your job drains you, retirement might sound like salvation. But if you don’t design meaningful work, no amount of free time will save you from boredom or irrelevance.
Others profit from keeping you in “grind mode.” They want you to believe you need millions in the bank and decades of savings. What you actually need is a few years of financial runway to build a life of agency.

The question isn’t “When can I retire?” It’s “How do I design work I never want to leave?”

Here’s how to navigate the conversation:

00:37 – The Big Retirement Lie: Why most people don’t actually want to retire.
05:12 – "Unlimited Leisure" Is a Trap: How the dream of doing nothing turns into boredom and irrelevance.
12:29 – Financial Freedom vs. Financial Runway: Why you don’t need millions in the bank to start designing work on your terms.
26:45 – From Worker to Creator: How to structure your career so work is something you want to do, not have to do.
39:10 – The Three Levers: How to control your work so it fuels a meaningful, high-value career for life.
